Lost Treasures

We’ve been there, son.
We have sailed with the bravest sailors! Stormed to the fiercest seas!
Fought the pirates, and fought with the pirates.
We were respected, cherished, valued
But now what are we, except old junks in an antique store?

Heritage, digitalized

Nowadays in Indonesia, cultural and heritage conservation starting to gain a big concern from our society. But did you know that you could actually use a certain software to design a batik pattern?

That method were used by Nancy Margried, an Indonesian fabric and clothing designer. She uses computer software to generate a batik pattern called “Batik Fractal”.

Fractal itself, to put it simply, is a concept of drawing a pattern, within a pattern, within a pattern, and so on (patternception, indeed :)). To generate a fractal pattern, the computer uses mathematical operations and recursive algorithm.

Nancy use the fractal concept to create a contemporary and modern batik pattern, creating opportunities for future Indonesian designer to develop batik in a simpler and more convenient way.

She create a new way of designing Batik by marrying arts and science, culture and technology, heritage and innovation. It’s amazing how those pairs were actually could go together, and it inspires me. We knew Batik is just one of our abundant arts and cultures. So, what else is here to innovate?

above snapshots were taken from Intel Visibly Smart Video presenting Batik Fractal innovation by Nancy Margried.

I Am Sam

This quickly became my #1 favorite movie after 2 hours of “Aww. God. I can’t. Damn it. Don’t cry. Tears. Fffuuu…” And several tissues later, I rewinded and watched it all over again.

It’s heartless to not wet your eyes. I mean, it’s a story about a disabled father struggling to keep custody of his only daughter. The premise itself enough to touch Hitler’s heart.

I love everything in this movie. The beatles references, Sean Penn’s convincing act, the lines, the cinematography, the dynamic editing, the beatles cover as soundtracks, the acoustic scoring, the moral of the story, even the credit title.

and my favourite dialogues:

Rita: I just don’t know what to call you: retarded, mentally retarded, mentally handicapped, mentally disabled, intellectually handicapped, intellectually disabled, developementally disabled…
Sam: You can call me Sam.

Oh Sam.
